PORTS 1961 presents “Altered Images" by Christopher Makos”
Ports 1961 presents “Altered Images by Christopher Makos”, a traveling exhibit dedicated to the photos of the American photographer known for his close friendship with Andy Warhol, who called him "the most modern photographer in America."
Christopher Makos, who was born in Massachusetts and apprenticed with Man Ray in the late seventies, took photographs of the vibrant New York scene and the La Movida in Madrid in the eighties, capturing on film and immortalizing up-and-coming stars such as Matt Dillon, Robert Downey Jr., Tom Ford, Pedro Almodovar and Miguel Bosè.
Curated by Gianni Mercurio, the exhibit, which presents 52 of the most significant pictures of Andy Warhol from Makos' archives, will be presented in a special preview next June 11 in Milan at Galleria Carla Sozzani, where it will remain until July 31, 2014.
After the Milanese debut, Ports 1961 will take the exhibit to 7 world capitals, starting in September with New York, London and Paris and continuing in November with Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong and Shanghai.
To celebrate this partnership, Fiona Cibani, the Creative Director of Ports 1961, designed a special capsule collection that captures the essence of Makos' work, using as prints three of his “Altered Image Series” portraits of Warhol . Taken in 1981 as a tribute to Man Ray's photographs of Marcel Duchamp dressed as his female alter ego Rrose Selavy, these pictures are printed on the garments using an original superimposed technique on two fabrics, jersey and silk satin, to create a unique three-dimensional effect. T-shirts, sweatshirts and mini-dresses are embellished with large gold zippers on the hips and a white shirt detail that peeks out from beneath the hem, both iconic elements of Ports 1961 style.
The capsule collection, sold at 10 Corso Como during the period of the exhibit, will later be available in the other capitals at the same time as the exhibit. It will also add one item created especially for that particular city, such as the biker jacket created for London and the cape exclusively designed for Shanghai.
